Governor Kathleen Sebelius Picked By President Obama For HHS

Barack Obama, U.S. President, has presented Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius to head the Department of Health & Human Services. His earlier selection, former South Dakota Senator Tom Daschle, withdrew amid controversy over unpaid back taxes. Governor Sebelius was an early supporter of the presidential campaign conducted by Barack Obama. The announcement of the appointment of Sebelius was made at a news conference, with much speculation in the media about her selection prior to the official news being released.

As head of HHS, Kathleen Sebelius is expected to play an important role in heading the drive by President Obama to reform health care in the United States. It is a stated goal of the Obama administration to bring about universal health care, at a time when nearly fifty million Americans lack medical insurance. In the wake of the economic recession and growing government deficits, it will be a challenge for President Barack Obama to generate the funds for his health care agenda. Barack Obama has made it clear that health care reform remains one of his top presidential priorities.
